“Altered Earth” Poster Series
Visual Storytelling
Typographic Experiments
Photography
Color Theory
I designed a series of posters for a three-poet exhibition, using typography, imagery, and color to capture each poet’s distinct voice while maintaining a cohesive visual system grounded in shared themes.
Design Goals
01
Translate poetry into visual narratives
Use photography and color to visually interpret each poet’s work, turning abstract themes into clear, engaging imagery that supports the overall story.
02
Establish clear visual hierarchy to guide the viewer’s eye while still allowing space for expressive design moments
Create hierarchy
03
Balance individuality within a system
Design each poster to feel unique to the poet while maintaining a consistent structure that ties the full series together.
Research
Hussain Ahmed is a Nigerian poet whose work explores themes of memory, migration, ecological loss, and human resilience.
Heid E. Erdrich is a poet whose work blends Indigenous storytelling with themes of land, memory, and healing.
Orchid Tierney is a poet whose work explores environmental loss and human connections to nature through a fragmented, urgent voice.
All three poets examine how identity is shaped by memory and its connection to the environment, which became the unifying theme of the series.
Physical & Digital Experimentation
I explored printed typography through ripping, smudging, and layering materials like ink, foil, and saran wrap to physically embody the erosion and fragmentation of land over time.
Iterations
Each poster is monochromatic, yet works together in a series.
Hussain is represented with blue to reflect distance and memory, with a calm but heavy tone tied to migration and loss.
Heid is represented with orange and red to bring warmth and energy, connecting to land, storytelling, and cultural strength.
Orchid is represented with purple to create an atmospheric, emotional tone that supports her fragmented, urgent voice.
